Summary:  This story is set in the summer of 1968. Delphine is an eleven-year-old African American girl who is sent with her to stay with her mother for the summer. She takes a flight with her two younger sisters across the country from Brooklyn to Oakland, California. Delphine and her sister day dream about what California will be like, but upon arrival to California things are completely different. Her mother Cecile has strange visitors in the kitchen where the girls are not allowed enter. Cecile ends up sending the three girls to a summer camp put on by The Black Panthers.
