Summary:
Billie Wind is a young girl that lives with the Seminole Indian Tribe of Florida Everglades.  She follows the customs of her tribe.  The tribe believes there is an animal God that talks to them, but questions that theory based on things she has learned about at school.  Billie doesn't want to believe what the elders in her tribe have told her, and the elders of the tribe tell Billie she is a doubter.  She wants the answers for herself, and is banished as a punishment to the pa-hay-okee, Everglades, to live on her own.  Along her journey Billie learns to rely on the wilderness to guide her survival in the Everglades, as she has to battle forest fires and hurricanes.  She learned to use fish oil to keep the mosquitoes away, and she befriends different animals along her journey.  Billie Wind realizes that the members of her tribe can provide the answers she needs.
